my fiance works for napa, shes been interrogating customers for their machine shop recommendations.. :) they say jims engine machine in caldwell is the best place to go. i just called them, nice guy. says he has a torque plate. will bore the block with the plate for under 200 and will balance for another 200.

sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

ill have to see what the other places rates are.

if you're getting recomendations from people at napa I'm sure it's a shop that does most of their work on domestic engines so i'd see if they have experience with non-domestic engines. I'm baseing this off of what I know about jap engines and that they have tighter tolerances than domestic engines, not sure if it's the same with euros.

200 for a bore and hone is pretty expensive....and for what its worth i have never heard of "jims machine" in caldwell....

Mulders and Moffit and Bratton are the 2 most reputable shops ive heard about in the last few years...

FWIW, most machine shops are able to take the machining to a much higher level of precision than a motor really needs.. especially the guys that are doing super high end race motors... domestic or import.

no offense, but my fiance wouldn't ask domestic folks where they take there stuff. shes been asking for bmw knowledgeable machine shops. she knows how exacting i am. :) im gonna take a look at the guys shop probably later this week and see if i like his work.

check it.
Moffitt & Bratton Automotive Machine Shop is a full service shop specializing in CNC (Computer Numeric Controlled) machine work. We were the first shop in Idaho to employ the Rottler F65 CNC machine. We can machine both block and heads to blueprint accuracy. A CNC machine is the only way of acurately blueprinting a block from an actual blueprint.

In 2006 we purchased a computer controlled Rottler HP 6A automatic cylinder hone
to further our commitment of excellence in cylinder block machining. Diamond
stones and water-based coolant ensures greater accuracy and bore geometry. Plateaus finished with brush inserts can produce virtually any cylinder finish for any ring combination. This ensures our customer the latest in cutting edge technology.

Engine balancing is done on our Hines computer aided electronic balancer. We
hold our tolerance too one gram or less. Heavy metal and no holes balancing is
our speciality. We also do machine work for other machine shops that want the benefits of CNC blueprinting so they can offer that package to their customers.
