I was travelling along in my Lexus LS400 with it running nice and smooth and came to a stop at a light. I proceeded to accelerate but my tach dropped to 0 rpms with the engine still revving out. The tach started to come up after I lifted off the gas and got back on it but once it hit 1,200 to 1,500 rpms it dropped to 0 again but the engine kept revving agian.

The car has a slightly rough idle now and shutters when I first get on the gas from a stop. It has no power at all and no matter how much throttle I give it it feels like I am giving it 1/4 throttle. It will rev out to high rpms in first gear and shift hard no matter how much throttle I give it either. It has plenty of trans fluid in it. Just sitting at idle the cats become red after it has been idling for a couple of minutes. Oh and when I rev it up doing a dry rev it wraps up waaaay slower than before.

Also, it has not thrown any CEL's.

If anyone has any idea on what might be wrong your input will be greatly appreciated

i just found a similiar thread that i read on clublexus the other day (similiar symptoms as what you describe) and his resolution was to instal new cats. on of his cats became suddenly clogged and caused him all kinds of havoc. he says he heard clunking noises on the floor at one point, and lead him to look under the car....he hit the cat with a pry bar and heard things floating around in it......replaced both with a couple cats from magnaflow and his problems were solved....im no expert on these cars, but GLOWING RED cats, tells me there is something wrong with them lol

Hook up an OBDII machine and read the codes. If I'm not mistaken, your car has 4 O2 sensors and you'll be spitting out codes to replace them if the cat's are bad (sounds like it since they are glowing red).

Yeah, I would definitely look into replacing the cats. Or just have a couple of test pipes made :D

Yeah I plan on plugging in a tester tomorrow and see if there are any soft codes being thrown. Thanks for the help guys, I was already thinking the same thing about the cats but I didn't want to replace them before I had some more reason to believe that they are bad. Maybe I will just get a full exhaust system while i'm at it cause she needs one

You could also not be firing on all cylinders. My eclipse had one side of the coils go out resulting in two cyliders not having spark but still getting fuel. All that Raw fuel going through the exhaust made my CAT get very, very hot in a very short time. Also the car ran like shit as one would expect.

Just a thought.

I'm going to have to go with ignition or ECU since the tach feed either comes straight from the ignitor or from the ecu itself...

And of course with the issue of your ignition not working properly that means that all that fuel that was supposed to be burned is now clogging your cats. Sorry to say but it looks like you have 2 issues on your hand.

well I finally fixed the problem today, almost 4 months later....


All I had to do is replace the coil packs which was 120 bucks and a few hours and she was good to go. Why the fuck I waited so long to replace them is just an example of what happens when I lose motivation haha.
