Name: David Kvapil
Age: 22
Fave Restaurant: Shige's Japanese Cuisine
Fave Music: Punk/Ska
Something Most people don’t know: I love being in the outdoors; camping, hiking, backpacking, fishing, pretty much anything in the outdoors, especially photography.
Turn Ons: Pain (yep, I'm one of those people, but not like the super fucked up bondage shit)
What got you into the car scene: My dad always had cool cars, including an old Mazerati Biturbo (the car I learned to drive in) and a pretty well modded E36 M3. In high school, after a little incident I had in my mom's car, he made me buy my first car (much to my disagreeement at the time, a 1984 Rabbit GTI). That car ended up sparking my passion for Dubs, and since then I have owned 7 VW's and my Audi.

About Me: My name is David Frank Kvapil. I grew up right here in Boise, spending most of that time playing soccer and hockey. I had hoped, and was working toward having a career playing hockey, but that was crushed by a car accident in 2005. My parents are Czech, and they defected here to the US back in 1985 so that they could have a good life for their kids. I enjoy playing hockey, autocrossing, and photography. Not really anything else cool about me.

Story About the Cars: I bought the Scirocco in June of 2007 specifically to build it into an autocross car. I was looking for the lightest watercooled VW, and it turned out to be the 1975-77 Scirocco, so I began looking for one. It turned out that a friend of mine had pulled the car out of some farmer's field in Marsing, and he was going to just get it running and use it as a daily. He didn't have the money or time for it, so I bought it from him and spent the next year restoring it and building it up into what it is today. The Audi was bought last October from a friend of mine. No real special story about it, just had always like the early S4's, and when he told me he was selling it, I sold my Jetta and bought it from him.

Am I the only one that David's scirocco gives a stiffy to? I swear... If there's a name for the disorder that is, dudes who wanna bang certain cars or motorcycles, I know I have it. Jay Leno should start a rehab center for people like me to check ourselves into.

Meh, LSB is over rated, IMO. Yeah, it's a nice color, but I think it only works well on newer cars. Do something really truly different Brian...

I actually see it as a very vintage color and can see it looking sick on just about any car...

Your Scirocco is F'ing sick! Mad props for rollin a '77 and doing it right!

DubstepDave
03-23-2009, 06:32 PM
Stiffer in the rear?

Yep, stiffer in the rear on mine. I would run 600/650 f/r with no sway bars, but I have found (and others who run mk1 VW's like me) that having stiffer than about 450 lb/in springs in the front makes it too stiff and bounce around a lot, making it handle very poorly on any surface that isn't perfectly smooth. So, we run pretty high front rates, with a very large sway bar in the front (the bar also helps to maintain camber through the turns) and very high rear spring rates with no sway bar, making the rear end act more like IRS instead of the semi-IRS trailing arm axle that the car has from the factory.

As far as Mirko's car goes, the higher rear rates will help to put down power better, and to combat nose-diving and understeer, a nice big front sway bar would be recommended. Also, the softer front springs will help to plant the front end quicker during turn-in.

Mirko, did your coils come in yet? I'm ready for an install day whenever you are (unless you've already done it).
