Its not too bad, the best way to learn is just get in there and start playing with things. Although taking an intro class could be useful.

Still using CS3 and loving it. I mostly use Lightroom for everything anyway, it does about 85% of what I need.

DubstepDave

Download the free trial of Lightroom3 from Adobe's site. The Noise reduction works VERY well, makes ISO 1600 usable from my D2x, and even 3200 could be used if REALLY necessary.

And that doesn't look too bad as far as noise goes, look at the drifting pic of Sylas in his feature, haha.

DubstepDave

wait wut?? 16mm is wide angle, on any format sensor. what you most likely have is a shitty thick polarizer that causes vignetting at the wide end of the lens. crop out the vignetting (because that's what it is) and it will look much better.

DubstepDave
09-03-2010, 03:15 PM
Yes, it probably would. Shitty filters degrade image quality TERRIBLY over good filters. It's better to not use any filters than shitty ones. Also, don't use "protective" UV filters, they also reduce image quality noticeably. Just keep your lens hood on at all times and use that as protection if you want the best photos possible.

DubstepDave
09-13-2010, 07:49 PM
Get Nikon. Canon is really starting to fall behind (the only area where they are ahead anymore is the video part of current SLR's, which if you're a serious video maker, you will get a serious video camera), and their prices are getting even more ridiculous than Nikon's on the pro stuff (The new Canon 400mm f/2.8 is something like $15k, where the outgoing model was about $8k new).

what he said

DubstepDave
09-14-2010, 07:59 AM
Yes, you can do great video with them, but they still have their limitations that dedicated video systems don't have. Banding, rolling shutter, object distortion if something is moving through the frame too fast... There are still a lot of problems with DSLR's and video, and it's because of the nature of the CMOS sensors. If I were solely a videographer, I would not use a DSLR, I would use a dedicated video system like the RED system.

I agree completely, Canon's video on their DSLR's is pretty damn awesome. But it still has issues (in that wedding vid, notice when the photographer takes photos with the flash during the reception, there's rolling shutter/banding problems). Canons do great videos for what they are, but they will still never be equal to a dedicated video camera. I'm also not defending Nikon's video on their DSLR's, because I know it's shitty. But you know what? I don't really care about video so much, I would rather the new Nikons didn't have video, and bring the price down a little, versus having the video option.

Back to the original statement though, Nikon is producing better products, at better prices than Canon right now (Wait and see what the 1DS MK4 will sell at, my bet is $10k+). Hell, even their new 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 IS lens costs $1500. $1500 for a variable aperture zoom lens!?!? Are you kidding? The Nikon version, which is regarded as one of the best budget lenses ANYWHERE sells for under $600 new.

And how are Nikon's sensor cheap?? 24.5MP D3x with the best dynamic range of ANY DSLR out right now, and the D3s, with low noise up to ISO 12800 (I've seen very clear images at ISO 64000, which Canon can't even come close to, and the Nikon can shoot as high as 102,400 if needed. Yes, I know the 1D mk4 can shoot at the same range, but everything I've seen comparing the two, the Nikon is at least a full stop better as far as noise goes at anything pas ISO 3200). As far as PHOTO cameras go, nothing can touch Nikon right now.

But if you're looking for video, yes go with Canon. Only really good reason right now to do so.

But to clear some things in this biased Nikon post....

The canon 1ds mk4 is a aps-h sensor (not full frame). D3x is a full frame camera so apples to oranges.

Also 5d mk2 would be a better comparison since it has a full frame and handles higher iso much better then the 1ds mk4.

Both cameras are very good, and will always have their strengths wich keeps things competitive wich is good. I do agree they need to have the option on some cameras to not have video. Like i have a 7d and never use the video unless i want to mess around, ill never learn it is not my passion. If they say made a 7dv and a 7d (v denoting it as a video option) that would be badass and i think would help with camera performance.

And yes canon has some spendy lenses but nikon isnt far behind with some of theirs. Their are after market lenses that are really nice too, tamron, tokina and sigma all make a few really kickass lenses. So any one looks into one or the other, i mainly recommend shooting what your friends have so if you want to barrow lenses so you have more options, or do the research.

My comparisons were actually correct. You, apparently, aren't even familiar with your own camera systems.

The 1D mk4 is APS-H (as is that whole series), but the 1DS series is full frame. The 1DS mk4 has yet to be introduced, so nobody can compare it to anything yet. So yes, it is a fair comparison, D3x vs. 1DS mk3, and the D3s competes with the 1D mk4 (although the true competitor for the 1D mk4 has yet to be announced, the D4). Also, just because the 1D mk4 isn't full frame, doesn't mean it doesn't compete DIRECTLY with the D3s. They are both the "sports" shooter cameras, with 10fps and high iso capability. They are both about the same price new, and they are made and marketed directly to compete with each-other. Just because Canon chooses to use a slightly smaller sensor for their sports shooter camera, doesn't mean it isn't a fair comparison.

And yes, Nikon has spendy lenses as well, that was always one of the things I didn't like about Nikon, but recently Canon's prices are outrageous, even comparing to the "Nikon Premium Tax" as it is often called.

Also, while third party lenses are cheaper, they are also not quite as sharp and never focus as fast or as accurately. Sigma is especially known for their focus to be off by a lot. Their Quality control sucks. Their 50mm f/1.4 is actually better than the Canon or Nikon counterparts, but at the same time, people usually have to either try 3 or 4 different lenses before they find one that focuses correctly, or they have to send it in to Sigma and have it re-calibrated, sometimes 2 or 3 times, before it focuses correctly.

Well, apparently my camera has some built in 'creative filters', messed around with that a bit, not really a fan of the vignetting though :\
