Was he disqualified?

Nope. Dan's quite the skilled drifter, and the people who used to get REALLY pissed about people drifting, don't autocross anymore.

So if I went there in my s14....?

I have seen a couple cars drifting.... as long as your in control and no like really trying to do it I think our okay... but I could be wrong..
I seen kyle drift his 240 around long corners and nothing was said and I know I did a couple times in my G back in the day....
like I said as long as your in control you should be good...

So your saying, doing only a few select drifts on an autox course might be ok?
This might not be a bad idea.

I will tell you, if you take your s14 and drift, you will get bitched at. You don't realize that Nad "the driver in the video" has been around a long time, and competes professionally. And the people there knew that.

You are fine as long as you aren't making a mess.
DubstepDave
03-16-2010, 01:11 PM
No, you are fine as long as you are in control. That's the difference. If someone goes out there and starts drifting every corner, and spins on nearly every one of those corners, they will be told to stop. But in Dan's case, he is very much in control of his car, and the one corner where he could have kept the drift going if he had taken out a wall of cones, he decided to stop instead, which was a very good move on his part.

So the whole "too much black marks" thing doesn't mean shit?
If they allow you to drift at auto-x events without bitching about black marks can we get drift stuff going?

oh hey, i gave that guy a free engine.
from what my understandings are. i hope he crashes that car doing that. i thought auto cross was design for GRIP.
ignore my rant, but this guy angers me
SRinside

I guess nobody understood me when I said that Nad competes professionally and thats why he was allowed to play around. It's not like he did that every run. I advise you not to take that as a invite to go drift the next autox. At least have a talk with Jereb "Lab Animal", Deeda, or Chris "Spikey". Just ask them about some stuff and see what they say, it won't hurt.

The funny thing about the miata guy was that he had better times than most people. That's the sad part....
Also SCCA Guys are getting more relaxed with crazier stuff with your car and it seems like drifting is becoming ok-ish... just watch the Mullet Rocket go around sideways all day sunday.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dV3PxWIIXtg
BTW, this was one of his easy runs... he was smoking tires and going sideways a lot more...
They seem ok with most stuff as long as: you don't fuck up the track, and don't crash and know what you are doing...

Okay let me try and help straighten some stuff out.
At tonights SCCA meeting they will be addressing the Idaho Centers response to drifting and the general clubs response to the drift miata.
It will also be on a live stream if you don't want to go to the meet.
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/snake-river-scca-event stream starts at 7pm.
If you are serious about this, go to the meet. You don't have to be an SCCA member.

not exactly. Dan has been autocrossing for nearly 10 years, and made it very clear to people at the event that he would be sorting out his car a little before heading to CA for a drift event. He also took several runs carefully, only sliding here and there, before really letting it rip. Also, I don't think he hit a single cone or spun out once.
People are still given warnings of driving dangerously. The biggest thing is spinning out repeatedly, or "driving angry."
I still say to go to the meet and talk to them.
This. If you plan on sliding around a little, be sure you let people know your intentions. Also, don't feel like you're getting treated unfairly or singled out if you get told to knock it off. Driving dangerously is a completely subjective thing, and is up to the opinion of the safety stewards.

Drift event on the books for Aug. 14th!!!!!
ScottyStyles
03-16-2010, 11:50 PM
Just for clarification; it was discussed at the event tonight that autocrosses are NOT drift events. Dan coming out and drifting was basically a special, one-time thing for a long standing member getting ready to try and take the next step towards professional motorsports. If you want to drift, sign up for the drift school, and help make it successful. If it goes off well, it will be a hundred times easier to set up more drift events than it has been to try and get this first one on the books.

From my understanding (and please don't mistake me for anybody official on this), a lot of it is a safety and cost thing. Drift events cost more to insure, so that's why drifting isn't allowed 99.9% of the time.
InSepsis
03-17-2010, 11:13 AM
That's completely understandable. The cost will keep some people back, but Cost to seat time ratio is almost as good as the same ration for AutoX.
Once the August event goes by I am sure we will get more interest into the sport and liven the scene. I am keeping my fingers crossed on this.
Also I think an event like this would be a LOT better out at the airport since there are no poles and there is more sliding room, but I am not quite sure how expensive that would be... (I am assuming less expensive than Fairgrounds or ID center lots...)
ScottyStyles
03-17-2010, 11:33 AM
The site owner has to approve the use you're trying for, that's another big holdback for drift events. From my understanding, the fairgrounds are about the only ones will to play host to a drift event.

Not true, theres no way that you can be sure your not going to spin out when drifting, it just happens. Plus the autox insurance doesn't cover drifting. Save it for the event.

Sorry I'm late.
The reason he was disqualified is, He was too awesome during that run and the SCCA doesn't tolerate awesomeness.
