Well G208, lots of great photography talent here, so I need your help. I took these shots tonight, I know some are not the best and blah blah blah. What I would really like is a lesson on editing, I am using "Aperture" on a Mac. Also If any of you want to edit some and post them up, please do. Or you could all just look at the pictures!

I'm not an expert but to me they all seem just slightly out of focus, like they are not crisp but a little fuzzy. Besides that I like how they are simple and clean. Plus the car is cool so that helps.

shoot I am not 100% sure on the exact settings I took these with, it was a Nikon D50, I know I messed around with the white balance and iso, some were taken with "P"

My roommate tried to explain why they turned out that way, but I don't remember what he said, thanks!

Dustin,

The camera settings that are used to capture each digital image are encoded in the image itself. This information is called EXIF data, and provided the photographer did not purposely "strip" the EXIF data from the photograph before he posted it, the information can be recovered for critical analysis and self-improvement of your photography.

I recommend downloading any of the free browser plug-ins that you can find online by searching "EXIF viewer". They are organized by the type of browser that you are using, so an EXIF viewer that works with Internet Explorer will not work if you are browsing with Firefox or Opera. Once you have downloaded and installed the EXIF viewer, you can right click on the image and select "image properties" to see the EXIF data.

Typically this data includes

Camera manufacturer
Camera model
Date image was captured
ISO setting
Aperture setting
Shutter setting
Whether a flash fired
White balance setting
and other generally nerdy, technical stuff

So why am I telling you this? Suppose you happen to shoot a VERY cool motion shot of someone else driving your car. The picture is well exposed and the shutter speed was executed in a manner that captured a crisp image of your car, but blurred the wheels in motion. . .

You say to yourself, "damn, that is a nice photo but I don't remember my settings." Use the EXIF viewer to browse the settings and make adjustments during your next photo shoot to incorporate what worked well in your last photo shoot. It is a great way to learn from your own mistakes and improve your work.

HINT, you can also view the EXIF data from professional or more experienced photographers' images that you like to see how they did what they did. Make sense? Some super geeky photographers even modify their EXIF fingerprint on the camera's firmware to allow the EXIF data to also display the name of their website or other proprietary data that they may want to attach to their images for accreditation purposes.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f251/MeridianWestStake/G208/EXIFsample.jpg

In this example, you can see the camera make and model, you can see all of the settings and you can see that the camera's flash did not fire. Don't mistake the last bit of information to mean that no other light source was used. It is obvious from this photo that studio lighting was used to illuminate the car and the model although this particular lighting setup did not provide meaningful feedback to the camera in order to be included in the EXIF data. Some studio lighting systems that are more sophisticated can provide data to the camera that is included in the EXIF data. Oh, and most importantly to this image, you can also see the Photographer's name and you can also see that Charles shoots like a true professional, using manual settings.

By the way, these photos look much better than the first images I saw from your camera. Nice improvement.

Very good info James thanks! I will definitely look into downloading one of those, it will be nice now that I am going to shoot in raw and manually change the settings!

The edited version looks pretty good, but the cheap fisheye totally ruins what could have been a good photo.
