april 04, i started out by putting a new motor in my 1985 gts coupe that i picked up from idaho speed center for $800, motor for $450.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/12/web/768000-768999/768277_2_full.jpg
did some minor motor upgrades like an intake and pacesetter header and oil catch can. nice clean motor and install, all done by myself the whole way. no help from any shops on any of this.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/12/web/768000-768999/768277_50_full.jpg
then i decided to change to a hatchback, so i picked up an 84 sr5 hatch for $400 from a friend.
started out like this, all gangsta sr5 style with og z wheels.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/12/web/768000-768999/768277_28_full.jpg
cool blue interior with all tar scraped out.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/12/web/768000-768999/768277_37_full.jpg
then the fun starts!!! SR-5 to GT-S conversion!!!!
i had to totally strip both cars down to nothing and while i was at it i decided to clean and paint all the parts and make it look brand new.
i had to swap the engine harness, ecu, tranny, driveshaft, rearend, inluding disk brakes(sr5 comes with drums in the rear), all gas and brake lines, gas tank, all motor components, guages, and then some. here are some pics of the progress...

remains of the gts coupe

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/12/web/768000-768999/768277_191_full.jpg

i had to drill a passageway to re-route the coolant for the use of the 16v waterpump and coolant setup. this is the head before, the hole on the right will now connect to the one on the left and then a block off plate will cover up both holes.

me and trev did some more work on the hachi in the last few days

finshed up the head work and got it all put back together

intake side in the head, cool view
http://a859.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/104/l_34db21136e7f6706c7e4f206c617cc0a.jpg

http://a791.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/124/l_2029e747369c6574f7edab9b0f7787ce.jpg
all put back together. notice the coolant lines up front instead of from the back. waterpump from a 16v fabbed to close off unnecessary lines for heater, and the top pipe was fabbed from the stock 20v pipe.

pandatrueno4ag
07-20-2009, 03:09 PM
shit, forgot to update this thing.

no, she is not running yet. we got the rest of the wiring situated and the base map loaded and went to start and we get no spark. WTF?
i think it may be a bad coil or EDIS module since there is power to the coil and nothing out from the coil.
im also thinking since i relocated my battery to the back, maybe the coil, the megasquirt or the module are not getting enough power to produce a spark. i noticed while its cranking the power gets drawn out alot and think that has something to do with it, idk. my cable to the back is not the biggest but i would think it would work fine.

i now have a good multimeter so i can test each unit to narrow it down and fix the problem.

SO CLOSE!!!!:trogdor:

tom- Diry? no comprende

makeitfit and DICKARM- yeah yeah, im workin on it. confusing plus im broke.

yeah, its pretty much the updated motor. they only come in the trueno and levin(FWD corollas) in japan, better known as AE101 and AE111
its based on the 16v 4age motor from the corolla gts or mr2 and has a different head and pistons allowing it to have 20 valves, 3 each on the intake side and 2 ex, and also has the individual throttle bodies, and VVT. the stock 16v motor has 125hp i think and the silvertop 20v(AE101), which i have, has 160hp stock. i figure with the velocity stacks instead of whole intake, header, exhaust, plus the megasquirt i should get around 180hp or more, i think.

oh, shit, yeah. brain fart. it is timing.
at a certain RPM it advances the timing to get more higher RPM power.
IDK what i was thinkin.

BREAKING NEWS!!!

we now have narrowed down why i had no spark.
-EDIS not wired properly
-didnt have necessary capacitor for the coils
-bad crank sensor

there also were a couple wires that had positive power instead of negative and visa versa.
here also was a re-occuring ticking coming from two of the relays on the relay board. we just re-did some wiring and ran the fuel pump seperate and no more ticking.

i had perma grin when i heard the first couple big bangs out the back of the car and an even bugger grin when we got spark after testing with a different crank sensor.

we'll be working on it some more tomorrow, today really, and ill get a new crank sensor to put in and it should start up. then from there davidK will look over the megasqiurt and tune the bitch....

will have videos

until then....

Ugh... This megasquirt thing is giving me a headache!!!!

first the MS fried a few things inside it and i had to repair it. after i got it back we tried it again. after rechecking the wiring and configurations, we went for it and it ran for about 5 seconds really rough and had smoke coming out the exhaust, the first in 2 years.. so we noticed the cranks sensor was loose and we tightened it up better and tried again and have not had spark since.

also the lights on the MS wont light up again.

im very disapointed in this thing.

so because of all that crap i will start all over after looking over the wiring "ONE MORE TIME", as they say at D1.

more updates as they happen...

Been a while since I updated this thing.

Some of you guys have seen my car at a drift event and at the hillclimb.

The motor plans changed from the 20 valve 4age with eternal complications to the SR20DET. Simple, relaible, parts everywhere, and good power at stock settings.

Here is a couple pics of how its been the last year. More pics to come once I can afford more goodies.
Updated mod list soon to come.

This was before I finished the custom intercooler piping. Its much cleaner now.

So what was it that was causing the motor to run so weird that whole time? How does it run now? In for more pics.

Sylas- I just had the wrong MAF. I had a DOHC MAF on there and they dont work so I switched to a SOHC and rewired it to fit. Started right up and runs great ever since. I also had Brian at BK re-wire my harness and clean up my wiring massively.

Ill have to look around for better video but I do have one from the drift event. The car that day was being difficult. I had interference with my steering shaft and the turbo manifold so it made it hard to turn. Something that it pretty necessary for drifting.

Ill try and download a bunch of pics up now and post as I go. I got loads of pics for this thing.

Of course I had to get a custom one piece driveshaft

New wheels. 16x8 XXR 522 0 offset.
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb207/pandatrueno4ag/IMG_0604.jpg

Fitment not bad for only having springs and struts. No adjustability other than the camber plates up front.
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb207/pandatrueno4ag/IMG_0606.jpg

Thanks to the wonderful guys at BK Industries for doing my wire job.Wiring was shortened about 2 feet and "simplified". No more unnecessary plugs and crap taking up space. Used the Nissan fuse and relay block.

Taking it for a llittle drive...
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb207/pandatrueno4ag/IMG_0749.jpg

3 inch exhaust from the turbo cack, no cat + no mufflers = very loud. Prolly gonna be putting on a muffler and have it come out the back soon.

I could sell you my sr20det mafs if you want it? I'm putting a z32 mafs on mine to go with my rom tune.

Looks good by the way. Loud sr is better than quiet sr. I'm running 3" stainless straightpipe from the turbo back haha.

I the one I am using works good. Is there any difference?

Im also hoping to up the boost soon and possibly upgrading the turbo and injectors. Its fast now but would be even faster with a couple simple upgrades.

nikuman
01-27-2012, 01:55 PM
Just up the boost to 12 and see how it is, you wont need anything else for that.

SRinside
01-27-2012, 02:22 PM
Well i'm not sure if the single cam mafs will max out before the det mafs since it's not meant for that much power.

And yeah stock boost is about 11psi from the factory so 12 is dandy.

pandatrueno4ag
01-28-2012, 05:40 PM
I will try that. The ebay boost controller I have is crap so Ill source another.

Another update.
In my second run at the bogus basin hillclimb I had a lot of understeer entering the corner too fast and smashed into the mountain side. It only bent my tension rods and broke my radiator core support. Plus broke my front bumper again, but thats no biggie. I have to fabricate a new radiator support now and while im at it Ill fab a new mount for my v-mount setup. The current setup is super haggard and ugly. It works for now but is flimsy.

nikuman
01-30-2012, 02:59 AM
I forgot which maf is which but the aluminum one is fine for stock turbo. Stock boost is usually around 7, almost always below 10, so 12 should be a decent upgrade. I ran up to 16 before and it was fine, but I wouldn't recommend it.

pandatrueno4ag
01-31-2012, 01:23 AM
Yeah, Im only gonna put it around 12-14. It is already fast enough stock but would be more fun if it was just a hair faster.

I still have a few other things to get done before I can play with that again. I just need a few good days to tear into it and get some work done.
