Then why are you running a $10 lens? From my experience so far with doing shoots time is money. Why use cheap equipment and have to spend a ton of time in post processing just to make it look as if you had better equipment.

And the lambo doors whatever that car is a horrible picture too, that pic shows you had a crappy lens, just look at that lens glare right in front of the model.

Not saying you suck at photography just is pointless to use very cheap equipment when even with post processing you cant make it look better. Your only as good as your weakest link. And your lens should be your strongest one.

From your sig, if you even have that equipment why didnt you use a better lens? do you want that look of hey i have a shitty camera? I just dont get it.

Seriously, I could go take snapshots of any car with a D40, just shoot "from the hip," and over-process them to hell and make them look EXACTLY like the stuff you posted.

This is honestly the only good photo out of the set:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2732/4124258816_6dac2d0418.jpg

Every other photo has the center of interest square in the middle of the frame, there appears to be absolutely no thought as far as composition goes, and to make up for it, you over-processed retarded HDR's to make some of the idiots go "ooooohhhh.... that looks cool."

The only gripe I have is that the rule of thirds is blatantly ignored.

But as far as the pics though, I wouldn't say they are bad. At least these HDR's were taken with the intent of being works of art.

spazz
11-22-2009, 10:25 PM
Lol sounds like some people read a little bit and is like heeyyyy i know what the rule of thirds is im coooool!

Read a book about photography from a pro. Rule of thirds is only a guide line. There are tons of "rules" you can go by to archive good composition.

Not sticking up for anyone just hate to see ignorance so bluntly displayed.

Edit:

E2blade after looking at the pics for a moment, did you photoshop some of the girls into the pics, mainly the overly done hdr'esk ones. The one that stands out to me is the blue supra either its the post work you did or you did photoshop her in but looks like she is kinda out of place. And my only gripe is the pics are really small things that a semi experience photographer should be self correcting. Cropping seams to big a big thing not getting tight enough too much empty space. And from your pics i have a hard time believing you on the cost of your lens, i think its just excuses for poor performance. From the work your getting you have better people skills then photography skills

polishpat
11-22-2009, 10:31 PM
Not only have I read a book about Photography, I've taken courses on the subject.

Yes the rule of thirds is only a guide line, but an extremely important one at that when you're showcasing multiple animate objects that require headroom and directional spacing.

AKA Cars and people do not normally look "good" when smack dab in the middle of the frame. Getsinwhatisezzin?

e2blade
11-22-2009, 10:52 PM
dave stop being a cocksucker, havent i stated 3 times that i didnt have control of shit.
man, there i go repeating myself again just like IMS.

DubstepDave
11-22-2009, 10:59 PM
i realize you didn't have control of anything, but there are ways you could have composed the shots to at least not have EVERYTHING smack dab in the middle. you also cut off the front of a couple of the cars. unlike what pat says, you do NOT have to use the rule of thirds for everything, but don't put the main object of a photo right in the middle. at least take a step back so you have a little room to move them at least SLIGHTLY off center, it creates a little drama to the photo and makes it much more visually appealing. i'm honestly not trying to be a "cocksucker," i'm just trying to help you out. with photography, there are MANY times when you do not have control of what you are shooting (actually with anything that's moving there's not much control you have) but you have to compose your photos so they are appealing without having to over-process them. it's called working with what you're given, and making the best of it, which honestly, in my opinion, you did not do here.

e2blade
11-22-2009, 11:13 PM
when you have people telling you what to do, where to go, and the only reason im even around these cars...i tend to, shut the fuck up, as id like to put it.

Those are big words Wold. Can you really back that statement up? Several members of this forum also know how to operate a camera. Moving a few states away doesn't suddenly make you a photography Jedi.

I get your point, and I will say that I really like a few of these shots. I've been lurking on your blog for a while, and I can appreciate your style for sure. I'm a fan of your alienbees setup too. Some nice lighting equipment you have there!

Be careful about being too sensitive to criticism about your photography. Most criticism can be helpful if you have an open mind to what is being said. Your work has a lot of promise, but everything can be improved upon too. The Internet is not a great medium for expressing your photos if you have thin skin. Try publishing a book instead. Books don't talk back or leave comments like people on an open forum will.

By the way I think this is a GREAT photo. Props. I like some of your other photos too. I didn't get to see your private linked calendar shots but I hope you got some that you are proud of.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2732/4124258816_6dac2d0418.jpg

Spazz is right about a few things. When the camera is in your hand YOU are in charge. I understand you didn't have control over the shots you posted here. It seems that most of these shots are just snapshots that you doctored up in post-production anyway. Just because there were paid models in the photos doesn't make it a controlled shoot. But when you ARE being paid to do a shoot, do like Spazz suggests and take charge. Don't let some girl with nice boobs distract you and make you forget everything you ever learned about photography and lighting.

Rule of thirds. . . blah blah blah. Rules were made to be broken, but only when artistically broken.

I will admit that you are a better photographer than me, and certainly more skilled with a camera than I was at your age. I don't make my living taking pictures, but I have made a lot of money doing it. Here is some advice: If you want to be a professional photographer then act like a professional photographer at all times. A professional is humble when praised, and receptive when criticized.

Good luck to you Chris. I look forward to seeing more of your work on your blog, and hopefully on this site too.

srsly. he is giving you pointers. every shot doesnt have to look the same as the others, off center, different angles ect..

What difference is it between getting your photos done at JC Penny where they can only do one angle and they all come out looking the same, or being creative with it where you are showing everyday things at different angles/situations/backdrops/perspectives.

Pure Street

as bad as this sounds, I feel like some of this is my fault. I had to leave the shoot to go replace some malfunctioning strobes and apparently Sean (the organizer of the calendar) started directing what was going on and was even positioning the shots. If I had been there the entire time, then lots of those shots would've been shot through Charles perspective and not set up by the Calendar Coordinator (which btw, has no photographic bones in his body).

At the end of the day though, the customer is satisfied and even if we don't like the pics, if the customer does, then that's all that really matters to me.

Charles, take everything in this thread with a grain of salt. We'll re-book a few of these girls and redeem ourselves.

On a side note. AZ International Auto Show here we come!

If thats true then I totally agree. I have to design stuff at work, and I might think it looks like shit, but thats what they tell me to do and I have to do it.

If I wasnt happy with how the pictures turned out, then I wouldnt go around showing it off like I was.

Just saying, if you show every single photo you have ever taken, what is separating it between the ones that you really like?

For example: I have made many practice DJ mixes, but Im not going to post them unless im SUPER happy with how they sound.

Another Example: I have LOADS of songs that im working on right now, but not all of them will be finished, and not all of those will be on my next cd.
