Some thoughts on taking G208 up to a whole new level...

I was thinking about two things, and happened to combine them into one awesome thought that may or may not be what the members (or admins) of this forum want, but only to voice it would be a way to know! So, my thoughts...

First, I started thinking about how to improve G208. No matter how you look at it, as long as IMS and G208 are both Idaho car forums, they are, in a sense, competing with eachother. I don't look at it as a bad thing, but obviously some people do and it has caused a lot of problems. So how could we be different without completely changing the direction of what this forum is about?

My second thought (which was completely unrelated to the first one, just random thinking... wish I could show somebody how many thoughts go through my brain every second...) was... is there a good Do It Yourself (DIY) forum in Idaho? Just a general one. Obviously there are a few here and there for specific topics (similar to this forum: cars), but nothing in a more general and broad sense. I then thought "Hey, maybe I should start one!"... then a quick reminder of the billion projects I constantly have kicked in and would never find time to do it on my own.

THEN I thought of this... what if G208 slowly evolved from just a car specific forum to something far more powerful. FAR more resourceful. And obviously, far different then anything out there? What if Garage 208 became something more to this nature?

Current members all have their expertise and input available. for instance, I would love to have an audio and video section to talk about and share pics/info on Home Theater, Car Audio, etc. I have a lot of knowledge that I would love to share! I know there are plenty of members who can share their own experience on many, many subjects.

I believe this would draw a lot more members, too. I couldn't find any other DIY Idaho forums just browsing around (plenty out there that are just public ones for US/world).

I don't know if this is a great idea or just a fun thought, but figured I'd throw it out there and see what comes from it.

And with a name like Garage208... there are a lot more hobbies that can be done outside of cars in a garage ;) Wouldn't have to change the name to something gary like IDIYHO (lol, I DIY... HO!). But maybe make a whole new section if nothing else with plenty of topics? I don't know, this where you guys would come in...

And no, no, that isn't just cuz I think you're awesome anyways... this is a good idea! :) There are tons of things done in the garage... for instance my sister makes her stain glassed windows in her garage. I was even thinking about teaching a bloody dance class in the garage... just sayin. (That doesn't have to be a topic. lol) I've seen you do your computer, audio, and etc, in the garage NoD. I love this idea! ;)

But as for making this forum more open to other topics, I love the idea. The only problem i would see if the shit slangin we do on here as jokes. Most people wouldnt catch on to it and take it lightly... It would have to go under overhaul or just have those sections monitored/moderated.

I mean, jeeeez, it could be a HUGE list. But really, just something that would be more along the lines of what has interest. I know plenty of members currently that could chime in on different subjects! Brian, you could easily do write ups and what not on how to do music production in techo... cuz techno... you love techno... techno. (Yeah yeah, electronic music... wahtever... :D )
Scott could come on and give some tips or a write up on fitness and fighting. Maybe somebody wants to know hair care... VWGURL could chime in. In the Home section, somebody wants to know heating and cooling systems? I know Money might have input on something like that...

I just know we ALL have a lot more in us than just car advice. Would love to see the potential grow! I would even venture into threads that I know nothing about and might not even care about, just to see what some of the locals have to say.

Again, just my brain full of ideas and spilling out, though.

The people in AZ and the people in ID are very different.

And if there wasn't some "compitition", why do e-peens fly all over whenever two members clash into one thread? Its my observations that more members of IMS have the issue with G208 since they can't stop their trash talking, but obviously, there are members here as well that just DO NOT like IMS (more specifically, certain people there)

anything to do with a car, or house, or life in general would suffice imho. there is a motorsports forum for idaho, let them have it. there is also a larger pacific northwest forum that is nice as well, but they dont come on local forums bashing either. :P

i could stand to learn alot from information i read, we all have our expertise like noD is saying, not just about cars, hell, i think i am pretty good at car and home audio, but i assure you jesse takes the cake on the information just as jake would be the guy to ask about dsm's, ect ect.

subsections: stuff jesse layed out plus more, landscaping, roofing, home improvements, ect ect.
this idea will not hurt anything, if anything it will help it grow as stated before. we all know you admins are not trying to blow the site up and make it gigantic like other sites, but instead of it turning into some high school dramafest like it seems local forums turn into, it can/should be growing into adulthood.

I kinda agree with this point. That's what I like about G208, its kinda smaller and more close-knit. I'm new to this whole local forum thing but I feel like I have met a bunch of cool people already. If we start having a bunch of new people joining with interests that are different from ours, we will just find more of the people that we are trying to avoid from the other site. Just my two cents.

Well what I find interesting is the majority of people already on here have these interests... I don't see where it would bring a huge pull of weird people. Plus Jesse, NoD, is talking about home theaters, audio, money saving ideas, etc. For hell sake we already have most of what he is saying in thread form in the Off Topic. I actually love to cycle and I got in a pretty cool conversation with Money (in person) about bikes last night. I'm sure we could keep the same vibe(fun, fresh, and upbeat) plus that would get IMS off your back and end that feud forever. I know lots of people here on g208 that love to take pictures... some may even have a dark room in their garage (maybe not). I find this kinda of refreshing actually. :) Please people really think about it?! ;)

Welding and Fabrication section? EH!!! I think it would be cool to have this DIY section, think of all the money that could be saved if the users learned to do their own work, framing, plumbing, electrical (that would be sketchy), welding, drywall, home and car audio, etc...

Making it too broad, such as an Idaho DIY, would stray away from the automotive side of things, and besides, to be quite honest, we would have the site littered with DIY guides written up by who? The people that did it themselves? By people with what credentials?

I mean, not to start a flame war, but that's like Deeda coming on this site and writing up a DIY about "Going to court the right way and what to say."

Like I would even give that DIY a second of my attention considering who it's coming from, and the fact that he has little to no credentials on the subject.

Yeah, I think ill just have to look into doing my own forum for something like this.

Though, the credibility of the DIY community is often times better than those who are "certified" and "professional". Kinda like, you can take your computer into Best Buy and trust the "highly intelligent" GeekSquad to fix your computer, with all their flashy BB certifications... or trust the guys who live and breath the computer scene. I have yet to have ANY failure due to the DIY community in any realm, whether it be home theater, car audio, mechanics, down to brewing, electrical, and cabinetry. Just my take on that.

The only way the site will grow is by a positive word of mouth and TIME. The diy/write up section is a good idea. We need to DOIT sooo rite that people will flock. That might mean some things may need refining but in a way to help push it further. In the end I still want to be able to say KICK ya DICk or shits shit in your tits without being in trubblz

Another thought which I've seen to be very helpful would be a seperare site blog. We could toss up all the feature of the months on there, cool posts, write ups on cool places to eat around town, pics of trips we take (car shows, drift events etc) and have a few authors from g208. Blogs are huge and it would be rad. No bullshit, no bashing, no arguing, just cool shit being posted with full links to the article directed to this forum

That is the problem with it. Us 3 admins on here have NEVER banned anyone on this site. If I have a problem with something you are doing I will PM you first before anything happens. We have had users ask to have their accounts deleted (only deeda, dvsidboy, and matts2g) for drama related events with other members, and i did so under their request.

I also feel like that doesnt put us on a pedestal over the other members. Its a community, not a democracy. I would rather feel like im on the same level as everyone else on here than "the man."

While runningwild went around and said it in a more defencive matter I agree with what he said. I'm not over there hunting for everytime they say g208, gary208, "the other site" or anythbg if that nature then trying to defend myself. It's an endless battle. I might as well stick my dick in a beehive and get similar results. Given that members would just say shit about the other site, venting for some reason, you can't argue with them. But just ignore them. No personal threats have been made (that I'm aware of) so people should just brush this feud off their shoulders and get back to living life to the fullest.

I'd say we are a self-policeing forum, we really don't need mods because most of the time we can resolve it ourselves. It's just when we get an angry ims member logging on here starting shit storms because a joke was cracked or someone said something they didn't like. I've been threated to get my ass beat through pm's because I said I didn't like someones car, and because I was backing up my opinion on ims. I'm overvit though, I don't CARE anymore. Why hold a grudge, it just makes a mess.
