Well it all depends what you need it for...
for everyday use just get a macbook... even a base model is great...

yea it will be just for like email, web, and you know songs video and maybe some word processing but simple stuff nothing major....
I used to be in the loop on macs when i worked at micron but haven't kept up... is there any min requirements I need?? like processor and memory????
^ That's a very vague question and loops right back to what you'll be using it for. Find the most complicated piece of software you'll be running... look at the minimum requirements (assuming it runs on a Mac in the first place) and go from there. I would suggest saving yourself some money and just buying a basic windows laptop, any one you buy now will come with the free upgrade to 7 (which I have and love) and if you're going to be using it for basic uses and not anything that a mac can do substantially better... you might be better off going that way. Do you dislike windows or are there any other particular reasons you like mac more? Just curious

Trust me rob... I am a designer and use 3 macs on a daily basis just work...
I get home and I enjoy my vista just as much... and the only reason I say that is because mac isn't what it use to be anymore... they brake and have issues just like every other computer... as a matter of fact my formatted vista without all the crap on it runs about 10 times better than my $3,000 mac... I am not even kidding...
save yourself money, get a nice windows laptop and enjoy it. If my work didn't pay for my computers and if I had to buy them myself I would get a pc over mac right now... but I am a label whore and since my work doesn't mind spending the money I get mac... lol

Well since you're being typical Jserman and being a dick when someone is trying to offer potentially helpful information... Perhaps you should have phrased your original post as a more definite "I WILL be takING the jump to a MAC" rather than "I might be taken the jump to a MAC". In that case like I said before, find the most complicated piece of software you'll be running, look at it's requirements and go from there. Also, I wouldn't say that one bad experience with a single computer should turn you away from an entire OS.

Afterall.. if that were true.. we wouldnt be using Windows XP/Vista/7 after the abortion of a OS when Windows ME came out.
Im excited for my MSDN copy of Windows 7 to get here so I can try it out and see how I like it.

Ive tried 7 on a virtual environment, but I have concerns with it:
Desktop:
1) Vista's sound card drivers made my music production very choppy and not as fast. Also put blips in the recordings i did.
2) I dont want to upgrade, to only find out ill need to format reload and install all of my VST's and music production software again.
Laptop:
1) Traktor Scratch Pro not being as fast for DJing
2) Crome & Freelog not recognizing my ostrich and datalogging.
And for sure it isnt going on my server since I have Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition on it.
^ 1.) Vista didn't like my sound card driver either, I had to force it to use an old xp one and that seemingly resolved it but I had no such issues with 7. I obviously can't speak as to whether you'll have to uninstall/reinstall as the way I do my OS's is a little different. I keep only OS on one partition and everything else on another so I wiped vista partition and put 7 on... aside from having to recreate shortcuts and what not and a few other small things everything works and I think using an actual upgrade would work much better.

I did. I said they became just as bad as PC's... simple as that... I work with a G5 Mac pro, iMac and a Macbook Pro for about 8 hours a day using about 50-60 different programs from adobe master suite, to office, to mysql /Apache servers etc...
They are no better. Customer service is better, but I have never found myself calling customer service to fix an issue unless something blows up and I need it replaced... in that case you deal with the vendor, not Microsoft customer service...
save yourself some money and take the money you save over getting a mac and buy like 8gb of ram and some 3TB of space and you will have a monster of a computer...
Also Brian, I need Windows 7 ^_^

Fuck pc's. Everyone I've ever known to have one sucks. Always breaking down, get slow really fast, constant upgrades.
You really can't go wrong with any new mac. The little MacBooks suck if you don't like squinting but still rock. Get a MacBook pro and it will last for years and years. I had a 20" iMac I bought in 05' that's still smokin fast. I know alot of you absolutely hate mac's for some reason.

You actually have to be smart at PC's to make the work great. Macs are for the computer illiterate.

Sorry, I didn't mean FUCK pc's, I just prefer mac's because of the quality and reliability. Rob, the only problem I've ever had with my macs was a power supply went out on the iMac and was covered by apple care. Do what you want, but MacBook pro would be a good choice.

... its a compaq. Might as well buy a pinto and complain about the gas tank, despite OEM replacement.
I have had plenty of Mac's that have had hardware failure and the cost was 3-4X the price for repairs. Keep that in mind. Not to mention, the way they package those units, just about everything is onboard, and when a motherboard is $400... yeah, good luck.

You asked what you'd need and I gave you a simple and direct way of finding that information, if that's not helpful then buy yourself a dictionary and find a better suited word. Also, while you're at it, learn to spell and get off your high horse. It's not plan (a course of action) and simple... the word is plain.
To translate to something you would understand;
If you don't want an answer to your question or can't find the useful information in a post without someone holding your hand then STFU
Not to mention the fact that you clearly have no idea who I actually am since you requested me as a "friend" on facebook the other day... pressing the ignore button never felt more satisfying... to bad there's not a "no fawking way" button
Unedited post to be posted later... maybe

If the aforementioned tasks are really all it's going to be used for then buying anything more than a dirt cheap laptop is going to be overkill.

last night, i had to reinstall on my netbook and i figured "meh, i'll try windows 7."
I had to use windows disk utility type bullshit but it couldn't format my HD from mac os extended journaled to ntfs. so i had to boot up to my mac install disc, then go into disk utility and try to reformat that partition into fat32 so windows could read it. then i got windows installed and it looks cool, ten minutes later, i wiped the hard drive and reinstalled mac. it always wants to install shit, it always wants to have my permission. i don't like all that shit popping up when i try to install something, but i use my netbook for the internets and music, i've got iwork, i've got ilife and it works for me. if you use your computer just for those basic things, any os is going to work, it's just your preference. i prefer mac. if i was a super haxxor i would prefer windows.
the one thing i do like about windows, is it's functionality with other microsoft devices, like xbox's and sharing your music library to it. but when i had xp on my other notebook it took 10 minutes to boot, and took forever to start applications. in mac, if something breaks, theres like five steps to fix it tops. in windows, i've go no fucking idea.
sob story aside, i don't think either os is better than one another, it's just what you use it for. or just be greedy and install both on something.
it always wants to install shit, it always wants to have my permission. i don't like all that shit popping up when i try to install something
but when i had xp on my other notebook it took 10 minutes to boot
You can turn all that crap off, it's only a few clicks and how fair of a demo period for an entire OS is 10 minutes. I still keep finding out cool little things in 7. And if XP takes 10 minutes to boot it is most definitely not the OS's problem.
I do agree though that for basic usage either is fine and it comes down to personal preference at that point.

i didn't set up the install right anyways because i was too impatient, but windows 7 is a big upgrade for sure. i might go back, or just do bootcamp or parallels on another computer if i get one.
