I was wondering you thoughts on this..
I thought this was a good idea to get people to go out an buy cars and stimulate the economy but it looks like dealerships might be scamming the system...
and the fact that they have to junk the cars that are traded in....
just a couple things I have found..

I just hope it's not gonna be another housing crisis. People gettin in cars they can't afford. Cars getting repoed. I agree with Tom. So they poor shit in the motor to destroy it. Even if they aren't driven again, coudn't the cars be sent to junk yards? Maybe they are.

I'm just speculating but wouldn't there be way too many cars and make junkyards overflowing? Also if you don't want them destroyed what do you propose they do with them?

From what I understand the purpose is to get the gas guzzling clunkers off the road...
this is why you don't get any trade-in value for the cars as the dealerships have to disable them and make sure there scrapped... I think they can pull parts off them just not sure how much and what they can pull.....
Good thing is you will never see a Honda or Acura having this done to it has they had to have been government rated to get 18mpg or under when first built..
I see allot of GM products being destroyed......SWEEEEEEEEEEEET
The reason they destroy the motor like that is because it is stipulated in the paperwork that all cars involved in the system are to be recycled by scrap. As with any well intentioned program there will be its flaws. I think it is a good concept but it's hard to get away from the fact that it almost always costs more in resources and materials to build a new car than to keep an old one running.

I hate it. Destoying perfectly good cars in the name of the enviroment.

Isn't it worth it? I'm pretty sure earth is the most important thing to us.

To sum up my thoughts without writing up an entire essay, this is what I have to say...
I think this program has it's good and bad things of course...
It's pushing to allow for cars to be driven that are more fuel efficient, but that is all a cover to try to just get the automotive industry more bailouts.
If the government really cared about getting better fuel efficiency out, they would accept cars that are over 25 years old, because when the car is traded in, the dealership must destroy the engine and powertrain prior to being able to accept the rebate.
The other things though, is this will become a vicious cycle within the next year or so, because you must either outright purchase the vehicle or accept a minimum of a 5 year loan, so we're pushing for people to purchase vehicles in an economy where it's hard to spend money as it is, and in a few years people will have troubles making payments, because the reason they have clunkers in the first place is that they couldn't afford a nicer car in the first place.
There is more to it, such as how we are destroying our wealth, and the broken glass window theory that comes into play, but I've outlined all that in the other threads on IMS, and I may copy and paste that stuff I've already written if this topic gets more attention or debatable.

The *clunkers* are going to junkyards and will get scrapped....the junkyards cant even strip any of the parts otherwise a hefty fine will ensue if they get caught...these cars automatically go to the crush pile.

No. They have 180 days to crush car body... Only parts they have to dispose of is all the engine and drivetrain components, but whatever is left after that, the junkyard can keep...

I agree completely... I just think that people need to be very careful about what they suggest in this pursuit. This is particularly true in matters where most (including most who make the policies about such things) don't really truly understand the true ramifications of their actions. I.E. the 70's and what that time period did to cars in an effort to make them more environmentally friendly. All that really came out of it was the least efficient engines the automotive industry has seen since it's inception and thus larger displacements, being floored more often, burning more fuel through smaller pipes thus creating a gigantic void of fluid/thermo dynamic assistance in the functioning of the cars and subsequently infinitely worse emission outputs overall. Ramblings aside, I'm all for doing what we can to both enjoy what we have all come to enjoy and doing it in a more environmentally friendly way, I just think it imperative to tread lightly.

I don't understand why we don't have a national emissions program?
