Not starting a project log on here, but it has been a while since i posted any progress of my project. figured i would show the progress i have done. 1.5 years so far into it, mainly just not in a hurry only working on it about 4 hours a week or less. i am on the final welding of the bottom and then gussets and the skeleton will be complete for now.

i don't know yet, i know without the front and rear subframes (suspension ect) on it, i can lift it off the ground standing in the middle of it, so maybe 500 pounds? i really dont know, but i can lift it still so it must be lite enough.

happens to the best of us sometimes haha.

thanks for the comments.
i also bought a kirkley aluminum seat along with the 3 gallon fuel cell and battery box you see in the pics. i need more gas for the welder before i can continue. every time my brother takes his welder back i either get it with no wire or no gas. i guess that is the rental fee? i also redid the foot feeds, shortened the arms on the clutch and brake assemblies short throw style. clutch has about 3 inches from dissingaged to engaged, and the brake pedal has about the same travel. using the clutch master cylinder and brake master cylinder, along with the pedal assemblies out of a 97 eclipse. they have a nice setup on the CMC and the brake booster is way smaller than the 92 talon one. i almost went ahead and made the chassis for a 7.50 et, but i just want to get it running and get some base line runs in before i go all "crazy." i can always add more tubing in later.

Looks like a fun project. Is this going to be a street driven vehicle? It looks to be ok for track use, but I wouldn't trust it in a multiple vehicle wreck or one that involved many variables.

Good luck with it.

omg its drunk scott.

I thought you had a wrecked parts car? Was the engine junk?

burtwell
07-16-2009, 11:44 AM
i have the engine and trans out of the parts car, it is a 7 bolt. i am going to run the piss out of the 7blt until i get the 6 bolt put together. not in any hurry on the 6 bolt parts, but if they come available, i will buy the parts one at a time until i am seriously needing the 6blt.

So just curious, how are you basing your measurements for suspension and length and with and everything for the chassis?

Way cool project btw

burtwell
07-30-2009, 03:32 PM
i built it inside the neon shell, front clip first, matching the talon suspension, then a temporary floor and basic 4 point, and then i did the rear clip matching the talon subframe and suspension up, then i cut the tube floor out and installed the square tubing that i made on a concrete floor. i ended up not liking the area in front of the strut towers in the front, so i did away with that and put a 1/4" plate on the front and went from there to the front of the sub frame with tubing, tieing in both the strut towers and front of the sub frame. i still have gussets and some more tube work to do yet, but i need to get the underside of the chassis welded up (top is 90% welded) so i can assemble everything back together and have a rolling chassis again before i start to add more bracing.

probably not any awd drag neons but there are RWD neons. IMO that's what makes it cool. Even know RWD would be better for drag

there are a few rwd neons out there, but they are powered by SBC's and such. there is one other awd neon, called the neoprezza. basicly they took the imprezza drive train out and modded it to fit onto the neon chassis. it works and all, but nothing this extreme. they modded some stuff to bolt into the uni-frame of the neon.

i just want traction on street tires lol. no need to have slicks when your awd and only 400 ponies.

Not to mention the results in the twisties w/ AWD. AWD is just fun... car doesnt have to be the fastest to be fun, thats for damn sure.

I still have the flooring obviously to do, front and rear firewalls, a little bit more trimming of the neon structure in the rear to lighten it up more, gut the doors (all 4) make a core support for the radiator and fmic, front airdam, raise the front end with the coilovers (i have about 1 inch space as of now on the lowest setting,) aluminum side skirts (basicly stock rolled look but to hide part of the frame, it sticks down about a half inch) mock my other neon hood up, some little gussets here and there (been putting that off actually,) mount the seat, brake and fuel lines, replace the glass all around with polycarbonate, and so much more. but i am getting there, slowly.

man thats a extreme under taking. how did you make everything exactly straight?

burtwell
08-27-2009, 08:37 PM
magnetic squares and lucky charms :) i built it in stages inside the neon before removing and cutting everything out.

on another note, i got the hood on tonight .125" spacing between the hood and fenders per manufacturers specs for gapping. i still need to buy a new hood, no way am i running the crooked hood scoop white one lolz. plenty of hood clearance between the hood and engine ect. i will snap a pic in a few days.
