Oh fuck. It's my Bug.

Well, I finally did it. Got rid of the Audi, and went down to Sacramento this weekend to pick up this rad ride. Drove it all the way back (and managed to make a wrong turn somewhere, making the 550 mile drive back from Sac town into a 900 mile drive :nuts:). It's a '67 Bug. Here's the rundown of what's done:

1641cc single port motor, mostly stock specs for a '71 Beetle but with mildly ported heads. It also has a cam and exhaust, and will be getting dual Weber 34's relatively soon. Should be pushing about 60-65hp now, and with the new carbs will be around 80 tire melting horsepower.

2" narrowed adjustable beam with 2.5" drop spindles in front. Lowered about 5-6" from stock. Going to drop the front another inch tomorrow and see how it drives.
Lowered 2 outer spliness and raised 1 inner spline in the rear (also about 5-6").
135R-15's in the front and 165/80-15's in the rear.

Scat short shifter.

Aftermarket rag top.

Some badass spikes in the hood.

Factory lowback seats (SUPER fucking comfy)

It's loud, it's slow, but most importantly it's low and looks fucking mean rolling down the road.
Watch out hipsters in the north end, you might end up with some spikes in your leg!!


Anyway, here's just a few quick teaser pics from my cell phone in my garage. Planning on doing a full shoot tomorrow once I get a new fuel pump and some gaskets so I can get it running again and not spewing oil all over the engine compartment.

Your not on 3 clicks in the rear, it would be dumped, also make sure you notch your plates.

Dual carbs are nice but i hope you dont plan to daily the dual carbs, you will grow to hate them, all ways adjusting them. They run awesome when tuning but always seem to fall out of adjustment. Save your self and at most a progressive or single 40 weber.

I wouldnt even look into duals till its a 2L.

Ride looks good but your going to want to go more narrow in the front if you go lower. 2" is really a 1.5" narrow with the drop spindals (they push the wheels out a bit. And the beam is is the teeth style or block style?

Nice project but if you want some advice on anything lmk, plus there is a local club that can help you too next weekend is the 15th annual Bus pilots reunion, i really recomend going

Instead of actually going through Winnemucca, I stayed on the Interstate. It took me all the way to Elko before I realized that I had fucked up, and by that time I wasn't gonna turn around and go back. lol

Just put the new fuel pump in along with a few new gaskets, and I'm good to go.

Bottom adjusters have been out the whole time.

This past week I finally notched the spring plates and lowered it more in the rear. It's now at 3 outer splines down and 1 inner spline up. Hoping to have my new front beam built within the next week or two, at which point the car will be a LOT lower.

I will be snapping a few pics this evening of how it sits right now.

Also got a new top finally made for it a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah, narrower looks better when the rear is slammed, IMO. Prolly gonna go 6". Also gonna try to do shock mounts inboard of the inner fender, but I'm not gonna worry too much about having them (if it's too much work I'll just say fuck it).

I know at 6" its so short its not needed, that black bug i posted has a 6 1/2" and it rides real smooth. I think the shortest i have seen is 4" with shocks maybe sqeezing at 5.

Some new pics with the 7.5" narrowed beam we accidentally built (was planning on a 5.5" but had the guys at Metal Supermarket cut the tubing a little short, oops). Now I just need 145/65-15's in the front and it will be perfect.

The fender always had a dent there. It had been filled with about 1/2" of filler before it was painted silver, and even before I got it, most of it had cracked off and fallen. So I finally hammered it out as best as I could from the back side when I had it apart building the new beam, and now I just need to do a little filler work to it to smooth it out. And the apron (below the front bumper) has always been like that. I will eventually need to weld in a new one when I repaint it. I have actually only scraped the apron twice since I've owned it, and it was only the bottom. I scrape the panhead before anything else on the car.

And as for how it rides, it's not too bad. It's kinda bouncy, but I can live with it.

Billboard, Bugs were offered with a factory rag top through '64. Mine is an aftermarket one. But yes, they were available with them.

I can't express how much better your bug looks with the O.G. trim on the hood in place of the spikes. I know that the previous owner installed those spikes, but you were smart to get rid of them. Your car looked great at Oktoberfest. I barely recognized it with the narrowed beam and without the spikes.

Thank you James. And thank you for taking the time to register and post on here. I just started to do some of the bodywork on it the last few days, hoping to tear it apart within the next month or two and repaint it, along with going through and re-sealing the whole motor and new axle boots, etc. Still haven't decided on a color, but it'll be different and something classic looking for sure. I raised the rear just a touch yesterday (about an inch) to get it to ride/drive a little better, plus I wanted a slightly raked stance, but I think it will go back down soon.

Canadian cars did not get semaphores, only the true Euro cars did. So if yours is a Canadian model, it should not have semaphores stock. Someone may have added them at some point. If your car did have them, then it is a Euro model and not a Canadian model.
