Alright, so i have a 96 civic hatch, 5 speed d16y7. today as im leaving the gym i go to start it up and all i hear is a noise that resembled a low powered blender (kinda hard to describe). But anyways, i got no crank from the engine whatsoever, yet my battery was fine, radio turned on, all my lights worked. so anyways i just started it by popping the clutch from a roll. Now its sitting in my garage, i called around asking different places and auto places what it could be and everybody thinks its the starter. My dad and i then took out the starter and took it down to shucks to test it out, it passed. So now were kind of stumped, but the dudes at shucks said it could be the battery, but i just got a brand new interstate battery 5 days ago. Yet we still test out the battery, we put the starter and everything back in and tried to jump the car, nothing. we then tried to ground the negative jumper cable and nothing. nobody thinks its the alternator, and my dad is still set on it being a starter problem, but before i go and buy a new one i really could use some advice. btw, i will not take it to a mechanic. they are bullshit. thanks

it could still be the starter.... your brushes could be going out... so it might not work.. but once you move it around the motor turns a bit enough for it to spin... thats why you can hit it with a hammer half the time to get it to work when they go out...

I would get a hold of brian (JDMITR) ace honda guy get you the best deal on parts and might have a little more insite...

Replace the starter anyways. It sounds like the solenoid isn't engaging the gear onto the flywheel. Moving the starter around might have cause it to work while bench testing it. The way you describe it the motor is spinning but it isn't making contact with the flywheel.
